The Outdoor Industry is Growing Faster Than the National Economy

Outdoor recreation accounted for $427.2 billion or 2.2 percent of the United States’ GDP! This is from the new report the federal government released.

The Outdoor Industry is A Huge Contributor

The federal government’s Bureau of Economic Analysis released a report showing how the outdoor recreation economy’s inflation adjusted GPD grew 3.9% in 2017. The U.S. economy’s growth rate was only 2.4%. Who would have guessed that the outdoors brings in so much business? Now lets talk numbers, going on adventures outside accounted for $427.2 billion of the country’s GDP in 2017.

Coming in as a leader in contribution is the OIA for realizing the economic impact of the outdoor industry. The OIA published its own data and advocated for the passage of the Outdoor Recreation Act. The act requires the Bureau of Economic Analysis to count our outdoor recreation economy toward the national GDP.

“The outdoor industry has always known it is a huge contributor to the national economy, this report brings new data to bear to underscore that fact,” said Amy Roberts, Executive Director of the Outdoor Industry Association, in a statement. “The icing on the cake is the new state by state analysis, which will be immensely helpful to lawmakers, communities and businesses in promoting outdoor recreation related activities and economic opportunities–the beneficial uses are endless and we look forward to our continued work with the Bureau of Economic Analysis to enhance the analysis moving forward.”
